Dr. Mehra, a nationally recognized expert in heart failure, cardiomyopathy, heart transplantation, and ventricular assist devices, directs the Division of Cardiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical Center. He joined the University of Maryland in 2005 after 12 years at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. Following his training in cardiovascular medicine and sub-specialization in advanced heart failure and transplantation at Ochsner Clinic Foundation, Dr Mehra served as vice chairman, department of Cardiology and chief, Cardiomyopathy and Heart Transplant Center.
Concurrently, he was an associate professor of medicine at Louisiana State University School of Medicine. Dr. Mehra is an avid researcher and has authored over 350 publications studying aspects of advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation, treatment modalities, medical therapies and alternatives to transplantation. His current research interest is focusing on genetic testing in heart transplantation, the development of new drug therapies to alleviate post transplant coronary disease and the application of new non-surgical methods to support the failing heart.
He serves as an associate editor for the American Journal of Transplantation, the Journal of Cardiac Failure and Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. Additionally, he serves on the board of directors of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, is Co-Chair of the Thoracic Committee for the American Society of Transplantation and is a member of the education and guidelines committees for the Heart Failure Society of America. back
